Is a Fire Tablet any good without any subscriptions?

Thinking of getting my mum a Fire HD 10 Tablet for Christmas.

Basically just for videos, watching programs on, watching YouTube, chatting, WhatsApp, etc.

She doesn't have a Netflix account, Amazon account or any other subscription service.

Are Amazon Fire's any good if you don't have any subscriptions or are they really only worth having if you have Prime, Netflix, etc.?

Got my MinL a samsung tablet so she could do video chat with the grandchildren and so she could track her share prices (she has a small number and used to sit for hours going through teletext tracking shares to decide which to buy)

She still writes to the grandchildren, doesn't answer their messages and as teletext/red button wasn't turned off as planned she doesnt use it for that either.
