I am a UK citizen, living & tax resident in the UK. I've been offered a 24 month contract in Republic of Ireland. However due to COVID the contract is for remote working from home.
Under normal circumstances, to do the job I would have to move to Dublin, get an address, bank account, tax number and live there and show up at the office every day.
But since it is work from home I am tempted to get an Irish tax ID and bank account to receive the salary but stay in my current house in UK. This would have the benefit of reducing the major unheval to personal life while also making a major jump in career progression.
The salary would be taxed at source by the Irish revenue system so I expect they won't have a problem with my plan even if they noticed, which is unlikely. HMRC on the other hand, since I would be UK resident but not paying any UK tax, would be down a few quid and might be put out.
My question is how likely would HMRC be to cotton on to the fact that I am still in the UK while spoofing residence in ROI? Do they scan bank account, phone records, credit reports for indications of this kind of border shenanigance?
Are there any other pitfalls besides tax? (I would repay the missed NI contributions on my 'return' after the contract is finished).
