iPhone peripheral - where to start?

I've had an idea for a useful accessory that would add function to an iPhone / iPod Touch. I have no experience in this field so would appreciate a nod in the right direction... maybe some tech forums / industry sites.

It's actually an accessory that will plug into the bottom of the phone (so some hardware) and an appilication, yes, to utilise that hardware...
