We developed the speedgun app. Its been downloaded more than 20k within three months.
We wanted to do an app that no one has done before as well as something useful. We wanted to test the Iphone's hardware as much as possible. Then the idea of a speedgun came to our mind. We did lot of research and spoke to many Iphone pros about this app and they all said it is impossible to develop this due to Iphones limited hardware capabilities. That could be the reason why there are not a single speedgun app out there.
Thinking out of the box, and inspired by the human eye, maximising the underutilised camera functionality and the touch screen aspect, Mediamustard's speedgun was developed.
The next version is being tested at the moment.

Well done, nice app!

Infact I really like it, but other than for 'fun' I cant really think of a use for it.

Thanks. You are right its mostly a fun app. Like 95% of apps out there. Thats why we published it as a free app. There is a new app we are working on. Watch this space. It could be more useful for than speedgun. Like Apple says there is an app for everything these days. But if you can find a killer app that people are willing to pay then you are in for a winner.
BTW if you have any interesting ideas, happy to look at a partnership opportunity, of course on NDA terms. :)

Hi,

Just jumping in on this thread, we seem to get alot of people who view our site on an iPhone and someone said to me recently ' You should get an app developed'. OK fine, but what kind of app (any ideas) and also some idea of budget cost would probably help me know if this is something worthwile financially wise.

Anyone help ?>

Our product is on the iphone, but its browser based

This is very interesting. I mentioned this in a previous thread.

It may not be suitable for all software but to create a mobile version of TaxiRoute why do I have do get an app built at all?

Why can't I just write a browser based version that is optimised for the iPhone.

The only problems I can think of are obviously not being able to charge for the app and finding a way to get a link on the desktop of the iPhone which takes people to my site.

Any thoughts?

do you think it would look right though?

ive never tried this before, it's just a theory.

ideally i would like the user to have a "full screen" experience where they didnt even realise they are using a browser and not an app?

never having done any app development of iPhone, do you think this maybe possible?

Sure it would, you can actually put javascript onto an existing web page which will detect the browser type, so it would detect someone browsing from the iphone and you can alter the content accordingly. Lots of big sites are now doing this, hotmail, amazon some of the banks.

my main concern is to be able to create a "full screen" experience...

no toolbars, no url input box. so i need to be able to switch these off and make the web page full screen.

It has to look and feel exactly like an app.

I was half way through writing the soap/xml webservice and kept having this nagging thought, surely this is re-inventing the wheel?

surely browsers are the way to go and not apps?

Trev,

Depends on the app really. There is nothing wrong with doing a web only approach and yes you could run it full screen with no address bar but you would need an app building which when launched simply launches safari mobile.

Typically you will go the app route when you need to do more phone specific things like access the address book, store data on the device use mapkit (google maps on the phone) etc. If all you need to do is present data then sure you can go the web route.
