iPhone 5/4S - who is getting it?

Emily @ Lucidica

I personally think the i phone 4s is a waste of time. It only has a few extras. In my opinion who wants to speak to a phone when you can just touch the screen anyway?

On the plus side, the i phone 4 will be going down in price, which is nearly exactly the same phone.

I've been holding off on upgrading until the new handset came out. I'm currently on Android (having previously used a 3GS for a year) and, while it's a bit disappointing to not be getting the 5 after all the leaked (supposed) revisions to the design etc, I want to go back to Apple and it seems silly to go for the older model now that the 4S is available.

Apple are notorious for giving 'leaks' to the press prior to any launch. The iPhone 4 has now reduced in price to £429 so I imagine the contract will also fall (the price for a contract and monthly payments).

Break this down a little bit, you would rather pay more money for the same phone that has a better camera and talks to you? I am very heavily persuaded by the iPhone 4 as opposed to the 4s, nothing much has changed but they still charge a lot more for it. $199 before any monthly payment contract is steeeeeeeeeep.

No one seems to be asking if they've fixed the iPhones appalling signal issues, dropped calls, turning on the speakerphone with your cheek as the sensor for detecting your face is crap, and the list goes on...

If they have made the iPhone4s capable of actually being a phone as well as a device to play angry birds on, this 'upgrade' will be a welcome one for many...

Perhaps I'm lucky, I've had an iPhone 4 for the last 4 months and not had any of those problems...

If you're in an area that has a strong signal, i'm sure there are no problems. The problem is I travel all over the UK as a commercial photographer (around 60k miles a year), and half the time the signal just isn't strong enough for the phone to cope. My collegue who has a blackberry and is on the same network (t Mobile / Orange) has absolutely no issues in places where I have no signal at all.

Upgraded my long-suffering 3GS to a 4S and love it.

I don't see why people are complaining about the 4S - it's a good incremental upgrade, is very speedy with the dual core CPU & fancy graphics, the 8mp camera is excellent and should stop me needing to carry a separate compact for decent everyday photos (for proper photos my 7D still wins though ;)), and iCloud looks interesting.

Siri, yes, mostly a gimmick at the moment due to its limitations in the UK but its voice recognition is pretty good and who thought the iPad would be of any use initially?

I'm determined to enjoy my 4S (on Three) because I seemed to mess up my contract cancellation with O2 as they want £300 from me to cancel my '12m sim-only contract' which apparently I chose when I rang up to make sure that, when my contract expired, they put me onto a rolling 30-day contract instead because I specifically said I just wanted to fill the few months between expiration date and new iPhone release...

Got my iphone 4s a few days ago. Physical design similar to the 4. However:

New chip means it is very quick
Love the ability to sync with Cloud (5gb storage included free).
Camera is fast and takes good photos.
Siri is great fun. Try asking what it thinks about 'Android'.

Glad I upgraded.

I hate that damn iOS5 - its SO buggy and crap, at least on iPhone 4. Apps keep crashing, closing, freezing, its slower than 4.3.5. I`m so fed up with it, I`m ready to throw it against a wall.

I only had one problem and my music apps werent making any sound. Re-booted and seems fine but is making me nervous about updating my ipad to ios 5 so might just wait abit longer.

is very speedy with the dual core CPU

The Motorola Atrix was released in April, 6 months before the iPhone 4S and it uses the same dual core processor yet you can get it on a £15/mo contract.

Someone also mentioned how great it was that you can sync to the cloud...Android has allowed users to do that from the very beginning... years ago, even on the most basic phones.

What exactly does the latest iPhone do today that Android phones couldn't do a year ago?

Hi All,

Sorry to jump in, I have been following this thread with great interest as it is approaching upgrade time for me and I have a few questions if I may.

Currently I use a BlackBerry 9700 Bold which has lasted very well, does everything I want it to but lacks a half decent browser and the ability to send HTML emails. My one best feature of this is its battery life, even with heavy use it will last me a good 4-5 days!

Now I have a colleague who uses the iPhone 4 and he has to charge it every day - I am sure I would find this exceedingly annoying, and slightly impractible, so I was just wondering if anyone has any actual experience of the battery life on the new 4S? I have looked at the tech specs and expected battery life, but some real experience would be appreciated.

I realise there are many alternatives to BlackBerry and the iPhone, and maybe I am being slightly short sited, but there is something about the iPhone which attracts me. By all means make other suggestions, and I will look into these, but in short it must have a good battery life, proper internet browser, the ability to send HTML emails, a half decent camera and then the usual shizzle.

Thanks in advance for your input on this, much appreciated!

Matthew

Both the iPhone 4 and 4S have Lithium-Polymer batteries. The 4 has 1420mAh battery and the 4S only increased marginally to 1432mAh. But then if you consider that the 4S now has a dual core processor this is going to be putting further strain on that battery.

I can't comment on BB but if you buy an Iphone or an Android phone then you should expect to be charging your phone every night with moderate to heavy use.

Maybe the actual phone is faulty? Ring up the network or take it into Apple store.

Plug the BB into Blackberry Desktop Manager and upgrade it to OS 6. So much better.

You're kidding right? The signal issue is well reported, are you forgetting the fact they built a phone that cannot be held in a conventional way, and needs a 'bumper' to work due to the fact your hand can short out the aerial?

There is nothing 'wrong' with my phone, it works exactly the way it was designed.

Hi Matthew,

I upgraded to the 4S when it came out and, while the standby time is lower than the 4, I'm still getting 2 days of use out of the handset. That's including a few voice calls, 3G on all the time, some games / apps / music and occasional wi-fi use. Push brings it down to about 24 hours but I find that it's holding a charge well.

Hope that helps :)

Yes I know about the signal issue but that is only a problem when you hold it in that way, which only really affects left handed people. Your handset could be faulty and there wouldn't really be any way of you being able to check this. If other phones get good signal where you don't (on the same network), I would say the handset is faulty.

Hi there,

Thank you very much for that, much appreciated - it helps to put some real use against their quoted numbers.

I have been offered a very good business contract deal with the 4S, and have the option to return it within 14 days if I don't get on with it so thats probably the route I will take.

Give it a go and see! Thanks again,

Matthew

I don't know, because I like my 4S just like I got on with the 3GS and as I have all the apps, iTunes, etc, plus I like the general operation and ease of use.

I didn't say Android sets didn't have the dual core CPU nor that they were inferior; I said how the 4S is a good step up from my 3G S.

Android handsets will probably always equal/better the iPhone because of the number of manufacturers (= better competition) and more rapid development / release cycles.

As a geek I probably should have an Android (and may yet get one :p)!

Most of people used iphone all over the World. iphone always launched best features in their new Model. SIRI is best software in iphone 4S. The New Model of iphone very good features as it powered with the A5 processor, has maximum storage UPTO 64 GB and has outstanding Camera. Iphone 4S has better Graphics as compare to last models, has face time call option. It has video recording in 1080p amazing HD, shoot stunning option etc.

My first iPhone was the 3G back in the day and had it up until my contract ended, I then decided to try another phone (Samsung Galaxy S) to see if there was a better product out there than iPhone and just to see if it is worth the hype.

As soon as the iPhone 4S was introduced, that was it... I actually queued outside the shop to get one! I've never done that before when wanting a product but I just couldn't wait to get rid of my Samsung.

The Galaxy S ran on Android, which I found to be sluggish, took forever to load emails, limited range of apps and it began to get on my nerves.

I'm pleased with the 4S. Emails are great, iCloud allows my things to get backed up, I can get decent apps when on the move and get music on the move. It's quick, simple to use and browsing the net is good.

I always charge my phone at overnight and sometimes allow it to completed go dead over a couple of days to make sure I get the best out of the battery.

You are wasting your time, it is a Lithium Ion battery not a Nickel one...it doesn't suffer from battery memory/fatigue. Charging rituals and various tips and tricks are all for nothing.

The only thing that affects the life and capacity of a Lithium Polymer/Ion battery is heat, number of full charge/discharge cycles, temperature and age.

I've upgraded from the 3gs to the 4s which was a pretty big update for me, I looked at Androids and other phones but nothing competes with the iPhone. Siri is certainly in the beta stages so there will inevitably be some bugs i.e in the UK you cant search for businesses however you can download other voice command apps which will. I think 6 months down the line iPhone 4s will be solid with the new siri updates and phone updates.

Being completely honest, I think I should of held out for the iPhone 5 as this will incorporate all the USP's of the iphone 4s and better.

The issue with the battry in the new iPhone 4s was the locational services, it was searching for your location every few sections which has now been fixed.

The iPhone 4s is OK in terms of battry but I would struggle to see it making passed a day, I don't know it depends how you use it.

one thing I will say about the iphone 4s is they all rattle when tapped around the camera at the top, this is with all the iPhone 4s's. I actually noticed it the same day they came out and was one of the first people to get my iphone replaced only to notice it's the same with all the phones.

Must be due to the lenses in the camera moving about.

personally i came away from the iphone and went to sony for xperia s and you know what despite having problems at first before ICS came out i am now totally hooked. My partner has the galaxy s3 and that truely out performs the IPhone so if your waiting for the upgrade of what looks like to be a slightly bigger screen i would consider the other options Of Samsung and Sony...

I've owned 2 iPhone's and both have been completely problem free. I listened to all the hype about the Samsung Galaxy S2 and have had two replacements because of persistent niggles and software problems on both S2's. Samsung's no longer a contender for me and it's back to another iPhone when my contract ends.

You should look at the S3 the s2 does not come close to it. From a personal experience and with my better half using 1 every day she's has not had a single issue with it and she is never of the dam thing :D

I'd be interested to know what issues you have had? Like I said above I've had mine for well over a year now, updated to Ice Cream Sandwhich and everything is tickety boo.

I never get any App crash any more or less then I did on the iPhone I had?
