I am self employed, and purchase my products and get charge vat(obviously)

a client of mine will be purchasing from me and will be claiming the vat back from the sale,

I am not vat registered.

can I show the vat amount on my invoice.

if not can he still claim the vat back?

I have just started trading and just registered, I am still to find an accountant, so just need to quick advise.

thanks in advance.

You can't charge VAT if not registered and therefore they won't be able to claim it back.
Depending on what you buy/sell it may be worth registering for VAT especially if B2B.

Look into flat vat rate too as that is sometimes beneficial.

A good accountant will save you more money than they cost in my experience too.

You cant show VAT on your invoices as you aren't VAT registered - you can only charge your customers VAT if you are registered for VAT.

Your friend wont be able to claim any VAT on your charges as you cant charge it. Your friend can only claim VAT if he buys the products for his business directly from a VAT registered supplier.

You can register for VAT voluntarily which may be beneficial if you are selling to VAT registered customers. You also have to register when your turnover exceeds the VAT threshold. It's explained further here
