Invoicing VAT to EU customer

Hi I’m looking for some help please with how to charge/not charge VAT to a company in Italy.

I have never invoiced anyone outside of the UK before, but due to time constraints have had to purchase materials for a third party and send it to Italy for them to fit.
We have been asked to invoice the third party direct, rather than through our usual UK based customer.
I am sure that I should charge them zero VAT but would like to know exactly how this should be done and what I need to put on my next quarter VAT return.
I did try looking this up and confused myself terribly.

First you need to get the third party customer's VAT number and quote it on your invoice. The value of the sale goes in Box 8 of your VAT return. There is more information here.
