Invoices from service providers

Hope you are all enjoying this lovely sunny weekend!

Someone who did work for me sent me his first invoice, but I did not like the way the invoice was structured, and there was also some information missing, e.g. the job description was not as precise as I would like.

I told him I was not happy with the invoice, and then I created another one and sent it to him as an attachment. I asked him to review the invoice and then, if he is happy with all the information, re-send it to me. However, I have also done the same thing for his second invoice.

Prepare a supplier's invoice, email it to the supplier for review, and ask supplier to email it back to you - is this legal?

An invoice is a request for payment. If supplier and customer do not agree it will not be paid, so I don't see a problem in what you are doing.

Thanks for your reply. I was just a bit concerned as this being considered 'self-billing'. I had a quick look at HMRC website and noticed that a few rules have to be followed for self-billing.

Is the invoice you pay done in his headed invoice format, in a way that makes it indistinguishable from his other invoices? I don't mean that his description of what has been supplied is different from normal, I mean would a VAT inspector pull it out of your file and query it.
