Hello all, im a budding inventor and have two great ideas for products that I think will be a bit hit.

My first is based on helping men with a simple task.
My second is based on travel and luggage.

The problem I have is I don't know where to start and would like professional advise.

Hi mate if you are in London then the best place for you to go and get help is the British library business and IP centre in Euston. they have free workshops and classes for patenting ideas and using the library's unmatched resources to search patent databases etc... you can also book a private consultation with the staff who are bound to keep your idea secret and will help you find out if your idea is protectable, unique in the market and even marketable.

many one man/woman inventors and entrepreneurs have used the library to kick start there empires. There are many testimonials from them on the site.

I started patenting something years ago, it didn,t cost a lot for the preliminary searches done myself throughbthe patent office, if you think they are going to be so successful its probably worth getting it done professionally though.

Hi Dean,

My advice would be to visit a patent attorney before disclosing your idea to a third party. A patent, if granted, would give you the right to prevent anybody else, in any country where a patent is in force, from dealing with what is claimed in the patent.

There are 2 main requirements for a patent to be granted: 1) the idea must be new, 2) the idea must involve an inventive step or not be the obvious thing to do in the circumstances. It costs quite a lot of money to get a patented granted so I would recommend professional searches prior to filing a patent application. You can do some searching yourself using the online espacenet database and I would recommend this in the first instance to identify any blindingly obvious documents.

You can file a patent application yourself but I would not recommend this as a patent specification is a cross between a technical and a legal documents. A patent attorney would be ideally placed to help you with securing ip rights in your inventions.

There are other ip rights you may wish to consider. Design registration protects the appearance of a product and is relatively quick and cheap to obtain. Trademarks protect a brand and this may be worth considering if you are intending to sell the products yourself.

Of course, you could just get the product on the market without protecting your ip. The problem if you did this would be that you would be unable to prevent another party from using your idea which, if successor is inevitable.

If you would like a free, no obligation professional opinion, please feel free to pm me to set up a teleconference.
