Hello

Over the years Ive been involved in forensically examining internet use in the workplace.

I would love to know how many of you either wish you could have it done at a reasonable cost.

Realise how much money it costs you ?

1. proved beyond doubt that a employee was accessing a football B Board and posting messages, every day for at least 1.5 hours a day 5 days a week.

2. a solicitor contacted me regarding a client, she had been dismissed for activley accessing pornography at her work place. Her workplace used a top of the range filtering application that produced a report every day.

The IT department contacted HR and she was suspended on full pay, until an investigation had been conducted. The IT department investigated, the employee contacted a solicitor they contacted me. this lady had 25 years service.

I proved that the evidence that the IT department had was:

a) unable to be use in a tribrunal as the data had been changed by the IT department (IT departments may with all the best will in the world try to help but they dont understand the "forensic" side)

b) proved that she was NOT activley accessin pornographic material

Does anyone here use filtering software ??

I believe it's poor management which leads to these types of restrictions being put in place. If you have noticed that the employee has a spare one half hours a day then you either need to give the employee some work to do or cut their hours.

I'm sure if they said anyone standing around doing nothing will have their pay docked and hours cut. Suddenly, they would find something to do!

Monitoring is good, treating your employees like machines is not.

Like I said, it is correct to monitor your employees - for industrial espionage and theft.

But this is completely different to restricting Internet access at work.

Happy employees are productive employees!
