Internet and telephone question

Hi, Can anyone tell me...........do you have to have a BT line to access broadband? I was on the understanding you can have any internet provider but you line had to come from BT - is this true?.........have I made sense ?

Just moving back to Uk soon, so interested in my options. Thanks

If you have a telephone into your house then you can get broadband (99%) of the time.

It is a very deruglated market with cable companies in some areas. But most other suppliers have a "BT line" underneath them.

It does get more complicated but that is the start point.

No.

Depending on where you live then a 'cable' connection might be an option. There is only one cable supplier - Virgin - and they do not cover the whole country.

If cable is not an option, then you will need a BT line to get broadband by ADSL, but you don't need to use BT to supply either voice calls or ADSL. There are lots of competing suppliers to do this. You pay line rental to BT and the other suppliers separately.

I've left out the more obscure connections like satellite and wireless.

i know that virgin provide you with a bt phone line even tho you have a virgin phone line because you get a phone bill from bt for the basic line rental. ive heard of a company called bulldog that use their own phone lines and broadband i dont know what area they cover tho.
