A few things you could do:

1. Add some automation, MassPlanner is a good one I use to follow users that follow my competitors.

2. Reverse engineer your competitors content, what's performing well? Can you replicate the popularity?

3. Run a Instagram based competition if your business is within a space where you can give anything away and people are willing to do a few basic tasks in order to get something for free.

I basically do all three of the above with a number of sub-tasks for each point, even for some of my personal sites I've easily managed to hit 5-10k followers in the space of 2-3 months. Niche dependent of course.

What do all those followers bring you? Are they buying your stuff or are you just collecting followers?

I can't personally speak for @scdirect however personally, I'll send visitors via Instagram to targeted pieces of content once or twice per month. Usually the goal is a mix of mailing list signups and conversions to specific offers. This is for personal projects in the affiliate space mind you.

Depending on your niche Instagram can be extremely profitable.

I'd even go as far to say that there are 'pop up ecommerce websites' that solely target Instagram who make 5 figures+ per month based on some estimates using my own CTR & Conversions data.

It's definitely not for every type of business though.

And that's the important bit. If you are selling fence posts Instagram maybe isn't right for you. But if you sell cute baby clothes then it can be a winner.

But what are you doing with these followers? What are you hoping to achieve?

So is it followers you want or is it people following the link to your magazine you want? If it is the latter, are they doing that? Are you getting lots of sign ups from your instagram activity?

So what's the incentive to follow you? Maybe you aren't getting any new followers because people aren't searching for the cars you are posting or they are using other websites to look for motoring news.

Is Instagram even the right platform to promote your online magazine? I frequent a number of online classic car magazine sites and I found them via Google images not instagram or pinterest.

1) A lot depends on how you got those followers. If you tried mass following, and they when you got a follow back, you unfollow a user, most likely, they will do the same to you.

2) Check the hashtags you use - they can really bring followers if you use the right ones. There are tons of great lists of hashtags prepared already for different locations, type of businesses, etc. - check them out.

3) Maybe the problem is with your content? Then you should work on your content strategy more. Check what similar successful businesses do with their content. Think what you can offer on top of it and much better.

4) Does your content match with the preferences of your target audience? If you target creative industry representatives, but your content isn't creative, it won't work.

In general, there might be lots of different reasons, and the information you shared isn't enough to suggest something very concrete.
