Innovative Breakfast Shop

Hi there,

I'm looking at feedback from UKBF on my new breakfast shop. As a long standing restaurant consumer I believe that I've picked up enough primary research to understand what works well and what doesn't.

The main niche to this shop will be focused on a nutritional strategy whilst implementing this approach into an innovative and forward thinking functional user service for example;

I would be looking at providing a self service system very much in the Harvester free salad operating approach but instead use trays of different cereals such as muesli & raisins, muesli & oats, all-bran, honey nut clusters etc whilst free toast applied on the side.

The main focus of income will be targeting those who want either a hot meal now or a fresh meal they can take with them into the afternoon but most importantly we want to abandon the sandwich idea particularly the dated approach to bread and incorporate a more sophisticated approach to meal time which will be revealed later.

A special aurora from the first point of contact with the store is important which is why we plan on incorporating a vibrant image that exposes bright colours rather than blending into the environment such as a wood furnishing image that gives an evening time feel or a metallic furnishing that's sparkling clean that almost makes you feel like an intruder.

I'm a bit confused if I'm honest - it's apparently going to be a niche breakfast shop, but one of the two main income streams is "a fresh meal they can take with them into the afternoon". Would that make it an all day breakfast kind of establishment, or a restaurant/takeaway that happens to do breakfasts in the morning as well?

On the more helpful side - healthy food is becoming more and more in vogue, so if you can grab a piece of the market, you'll be in a good place - but there is a lot of competition out there already.

I think what Mike means by "Apprentice-speak" is "business gibberish" - hollow meaningless words that are written more in the style of an anxious parade of knowledge, rather than of actually saying anything of meaningful value...

"innovative and forward thinking functional user service" is not phraseology that impresses the man on the Clapham Omnibus, although, bizarrely, it might convince a bank manager to give you a loan

Exactly.

If you want to do things differently, to stand out from the crowd and make the customer feel he has a better choice, then say that.

New, novel restaurants have a reasonable chance of success (Yo Sushi, for example), but tell us in a language that we can understand, not in marketing speak.

Isn't that what Brewers Fayre, TableTable and some of the budget hotel chains already do? I'm sorry I don't see what is 'unique'.

To be honest eating cereal is something that is pretty messy. Might put people off going in especially if they only wanted a cup of coffee. Also, how much can you reasonably charge for opening a packet and dispensing into a bowl.

There are many adapatations of what you plan to do as previously mentioned however in one way that doesn't mean you wont succeed.

What market research have you done? Have you got your target audience feedback? This will give an idea of what they think and with that you can develop from it. Best thing about this is it doesn't have to be expensive but will give you a good starting point.

Think outside the box for your marketing, Most independent outlets now simply have a an A board and a few branded posters in the window with badly hand written writing ( probabaly says more about my area than anything).

What can you do that differs from the others? Why will people use you instead of healthy alternatives?

Hope this helps

Some replies here are a little harsh, but there is lots of truth.

You seem to have a mix of ideas which hasn't really come out as a coherent strategy.

The 2 key things I picked out are healthy options and vibrant colours - which aren't unique (which is a good thing) and do make commercial sense.

At a practical level, most take-always rely on sandwiches for the simple reason that they are practical, cost effective & easy to eat. things like porridge, salad bowls and granola pots are appearing but use the same compact formula.

If you formulate & consolidate your ideas you might get more positive feedback.

Oh, and never worry about 'it's already been done' - that is always a good thing.

I'm a breakfast fan and often arrive in London early for a cooked breakfast which lasts me just about all day and often go to Brighton at weekends and have one too but the quality in Brighton is poor and I would gladly pay double for a good one.

So Longrun please come to Brighton and I'll pay £10 for Dorset cereals muesli, a Waitrose quality sausage, a rasher of dry cured bacon, a free range egg, Heinz baked beans, a hash brown (no onions please), black pudding with minimal white chunks, wholemeal toast followed by toast and Tiptree marmalade and of course accompanied by Twinings tea in a proper pot with a tea strainer.

PS don't worry about the critique, this lot are as common as muck ;)

I've got a CSE grade 4 in English (1972) and understood what you meant....sort of.

If it's been done before and it's worked then why shy away from it? :)

If it's been done before and it's failed - Grab the concept make your changes and hope for the best. :)

If it's never been done before and that's a definite... expect no customers for a short period of time - going off what you've said in the OP I personally wouldn't know what you were selling - I mean you're a breakfast shop? Does that mean I can come in and buy a bacon sarnie, or does it mean I come in and purchase produce to take to work to make there?

Personally, I'd be a bit buggered... what about Dinner/lunch? what do I do there... my favourable place is only advertising breakfasts!! :(

Offtopic: I love the definition. Should start writing such down!

Ontopic: I don`t fully understand the idea, but I always respect people with ideas!
Basically I assume you want to focus on providing healthy food for busy people. This sounds right, as many people eat tons of junk food, because they are too busy. If I had such a restaurant near my office, I`d definitely visit it on a regular basis. However I need to have a good choice of meals :)

Being a Londoner, would love to have breakfast options near tube stations early in the morning. There is Pret/Eat/Starbucks everywhere but you would have thought passing trade via a stall outside the tube station would perform quite well...

The toughest thing is to get the place/permission next to the tube station....
