Also, SEO isn't SPAM. It can be a spam and often is, but only if made by low quality providers (the ones that usually charge $50 per TOP position). Proper SEO firms have good understanding of niches, they do market research, niche research, they hire professional writers, often they are very good at offline marketing as well. So, it's not all white and black.

It's not enough that you post your content on social media like Facebook. You should know first your target market. In that way, you are sure what social media will be effective for your campaign. Like for example when you're a B2B Lead Generation company like us, it would be such a waste of time posting on Facebook when our target audience are on LinkedIn and Google+. There are also some free content distribution tools like social bookmarking and curation sites that will be able to help you to boost your online traffic.

I guess it's not enough to just post content and wait for the blog increase its traffic. There are many factors that could contribute to that; the quality content, reaching your target audience with the right platforms and some basic seo linkbuilding.

I'd suggest pressing on with social media. Personally I try to steer away from tactics that people would say are SEO purely because you never know what Google's next update will be, so its not the most reliable source of traffic.

There are loads of posts on the web about social media so take a look. One approach I do is to "lock" exclusive content on my blog and people have to like, tweet or +1 the page to unlock the content. A great way of building up engagement.
