Hi

I'm going through receipts for expenses and have got to a receipt I received for the purchase of a microwave for our office purchased from Asda.

Asda do not issue VAT receipts automatically at the checkout - you have to go to the customer service desk to obtain one and they write it out using a carbon paper notepad!

I have noticed they have incorrectly stated the VAT. Cost of microwave was £40.00. They have given me a receipt stating VAT was £8.00.

Just wondering if I should put this through on our accounts as £8.00 for VAT as this is what I have a receipt for or correct it to what the VAT should be but then not have a receipt that reflects this?

Thanks

Tesco's do exactly the same thing. Maths obviously not being a requirement for staff on the customers services desk. To them, £8 is 20% of £40, because they just did it on a calculator as £80 - 20% =

Tesco were quite blunt with me and told me they knew this was correct. Being a smart arse, I asked them to work out the VAT on something costing a hundred quid. They did, and got £80 ex VAT. I then asked them to add 20% back on, and the look on their face was lovely - total con fusion why it didn't go back to £100.

I'd change the receipt, and write the correct amount on it.
