Hi,
So after i have decided not to be VAT registered im planning on impoting some perfume from USA. I already know that i wont have to pay custom duty just the 17,5% VAT. I can achive saving of at least 25% of RRP. So few questions:

1. Is it a good saving ?
2. What other charges would i have to pay appart from the VAT and shipping ?

Please share Your opinions.

Many Thanks

Hi Vic,

theres another no refundablr duty to pay of 15% of the total value of the goods imported from USA...

Since May 2005 additional custom duties have been applied on the import of certain goods from the United States. This was in retaliation to what was commonly know as the 'Byrd amendment'. For more on the background on this please refer to JCCC paper (07) 10.

mainly because US sellers were concerned at cheap european imports, so the US slapped an extra duy on european Imports, The EU in brussels did the same with US imports.

So basically you have to pay a further 15% of the total value then add the 17.5% vat

Thank You

is that wrong then ?
http://www.dutycalculator.com/new-import-tax-calculation/saved_calculations/view_details/167696/

Total customs value: £40.26 Import duty: £0.00 Import VAT: £7.04 Total import duty & VAT due: £7.04 Total landed cost: £47.30
It doesnt mension anything about 15%. If i have to add that 15% then its pretty pointless as my profit turns into 5%..

I tought 15% import duty was on clothes etc...

REFERENCE: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Byrd_Amendment

Please correct me if im wrong.

How many retailers sell at the RRP most will be well below,

Why not buy from UK wholesalers?

Main purfume makers control who sells their goods and will probably stop you selling goods not intended for the UK market (grey goods)

Can You please tell me more about it as i cant find any information. How is it calculated ?
    Thanks

The deferment fee is when the company clearing the freight, have an account with customs so that the duty and Vat is paid to them as soon as it is cleared and then it is up to that company to get the costs from you. This makes the process a lot quicker but they charge for the service. Some charge a percentage of the total amount, others just charge a flat fee.
