Hi there,

New member here looking for a bit of advice.

I recently started importing beer glasses from China. I started off with a small order of 100 and chose to use UPS to carry out the delivery. It was a very expensive but I wanted the security of actually getting the glasses.

I now want to buy 1000 of these glasses coming to around $4000, which includes shipping to a Scottish port. How many Scottish ports deal with deliveries like this? Do I have to pay additional fees and how much are they likely to be? Do I need to be a company to order and receive this amount?

With regards to payment, they said "the payment is 30% up front, and balanced by a copy of B/L" - what does this actually mean?

Thanks for the advice :)

Hi Kev,

Most shipping services from the Far East will come into either Felixstowe or Southampton, and if your shipment is a part of a container load, will likely be unpacked at a warehouse close to the port.

I would suggest you order your consignment under terms FOB for which i can give you a complete quote for the shipping.

If you allow the manufacturer of the glasses to arrange the shipping you
will find you will end up paying over inflated costs in the U.K.

With shipping glasses as a part container load, i would ask your supplier to make sure the glasses are well packed for sea shipment and that they are
palletised and shrink wrapped to protect them.

In respect of your question re B/L, this is a Bill of Lading, which is a shipping document, which gives you legal title to your goods when they arrived in the U.K.

You shipper is asking for payment of 30% of starting production of your shipment and the remaing 70% to be paid when you have a copy of the B/L.

I would ensure that the B/L is a confirmed shipped on board B/L to protect your interest and you know your goods are on the water before paying the balance.

If you let me know where in China your goods are being shipped from and where in the U.K. you would like delivery, can do a door to door quote for you.

Kind Regards

In the case of the premise of delivery, 30% of the amount prepaid ?

Are there any ports in Scotland? I'm based in Dundee so it would probably help if this was possible.

It would help if you could give me a quote for shipping :)

There is another company who demand 100% upfront and payment via PayPal - is this safe to use?

The shipping would be from Shanxi in China to Dundee

Thanks for all the help!
