Importing from China - Costs

Hi to all I am very new to this forum, so please bear with me if the questions I ask appear 'simple'.

We are a small business in Birmingham Uk who have created / designed our own brand of hanging paper card air fresheners (for cars).
We have imported once by sea and being new to this business we just accepted the suppliers costings. In future we know to ship FOB.

The reason for my post is we have an urgent consignment to import into the UK for mid - end of Jan 2012, and we want to have it sent by Air / Courier etc.

Our Supplier has quoted us Air Freight Costs $5152 China to UK Airport.

There are 6 Cartons weighing 15kgs each
38x40x60cm per carton

Can anyone advise if this sounds reasonable ? It just seems a lot to me.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated :|

Have you called a local freight forwarder?

$57 per kg sounds horrendous - should be under 10% of that, however, you do not say what that price includes - clearance, delivery to your door etc.

Also, if you were to ship now, via a sea conference vessel, you would probably get it mid/end January, costing a few hundred dollars.

Do you need all of the shipment at the same time?

Hi

Thanks for your replies, a couple of things to mention. Production has not started yet, so supplier just sending quote details, the cost is from Supplier Factory - Uk Airport (not including the manufacturing / production this is a seperate cost another $9150.

The $5150 is just the Shipping Costs....

The deadline is too tight for sending by sea goods would not arrive in time, our retailer has put in a 'late order' so to speak!

Can anyone recommend a Freight Forwarder?

    Hello Rosanna,

I think you will get several freighters make posts on Monday saying they can help!

Its very important that you always arrange the freight (FOB) and never leave it to your Chinese supplier.

Why don't you just check with DHL to at least give you a guide? (They are showing £200 per 15kg carton from UK to China.)

They can arrange collection from China.

I have just had a look through my paperwork and I paid:

USD$390 for my 2 x 21kg boxes sent from China via DHL

I also had 5 other boxes sent via TNT and that cost:

    USD$312 for 5 boxes @ 7.3kg each

The 2 Chinese factories used their own courier account TNT/DHL and then invoiced me the fee, as they get a better rate;)

    Hope this helps:)

We are a UK freight forwarder and can get you a price for shipping your goods by air or sea.

If you can get me over all the details to [email protected] I'll quote you asap and then we can get it arranged so if arrives before the end of Jan.

In addition to what you have provided I only need the port it would sail from.
