Hello guys.

I am thinking about importing brand names clothes from USA and have some questions if you could help.

1. What's the tax and duty ?
2. How do they count it ? Let's say on the t-shirt with brand name says $100, and retailer tag says $39. Is it counted based on the price I paid for it or how much is it worth for "them" ?
3. What do I need to do to be able to sell them ? Do I need a letter from the manufacture ? All of them comes from outlets, they are new, but from last season.

Thank you so much for everybody who could help.

Hi,

If you are importing brand names cloths from usa it will cost you so much. Go for cut and sew manufacturers they can cut and sew it according to your demand and private label it.
It will cost you much cheaper than importing brand name cloths.

Brand name already has some following and marketing can be a bit easier than unknown brand.
What you save one way you can spend on marketing another way.

You import then the price you paid and the shipping you paid is used. What you sell the item for is up to you and may be unknown at the time of importing.

Where (in general) do you plan to sell them?

Duty & VAT will be payable on the 'Landed Price' which is the invoice value of the goods to you plus the C&F or CIF shipping costs. It doesn't matter what the price tags say on the garments, customs are interested in what you as the importer paid for them.

I am not interested in private label.

I am considering creating my own online store. That's why I am asking do I need any permission to sell brand names clothes ?

What are the taxes & duties ? Let's say I spent for clothes and shipping £3000.

The brand owners may want to know who you are and what you are doing. Buying from their distributor works.
Just be aware that some parts of the world can have different rights. So check with brand owner.

The VAT is 20%, no idea what the duty is on that spend.

Do you know if it's gonna work if I buy from retailers ? On the clearance they have extremely low prices.

some of the usa online stores often have discounts due to holidays, clearness, season sale, etc. you can catch chance to buy a lot.

Yea I got some contacs, but I am looking for tax and duty information in UK.

if your business idea is buying retail and exporting then don't bother you can not make money from doing this.

If you haven't made money on it, doesn't mean I won't.

Retail price usually higher than wholesale price.

Even on clearance.

Exporting you may well be up against businesses who are able to buy items cheaper than you without the shipping costs you have.

i haven't made any money on it since i would never attempt to make money by doing this since its a terrible idea. import duty, sales tax, payment transaction fees, overheads, corporation tax = no profit for you

Last month you asked what the taxes and import duties would be and this month you are still asking the same.

If you were serious about this you would have searched for the official government website that actually gives you the answers rather than take the lazy route and ask someone to tell you here, information which you will not know whether is right or wrong.

I love when people judge based on one or two actions. Already got answers to all my questions, and it was just one of the way to find answers, but thank you anyway for your help.

To be fair how come you have not checked this out already?

Trade tariff
Google commodity code for t-shirt (example)
Enter commodity code into system.
Look for best description of products. Composition etc.
Click on best heading that describes items.
Check duty rate via 3rd country (USA)

Buy clothes. Have them consolidated in USA create commercial invoice attach to goods
Ship.

Pay duties and taxes on arrival. £3000 = approx £600 VAT and depending on duty rate anything from 0 To about 7% maybe more but often not. So 7% of 3k £275
Ish.

This sounds like a little hustle so maybe you need to hustle a bit more and keep overheads low for the time being....

For the benefit of anyone else reading this thread (as the op has all his information now):

The link on how to classify clothing is here
A T-shirt with no buttons, for example, is classified under code 6109

You then work out the commodity code taking into account what it is made out of.
So for the T-shirt example it starts 6109 but you then add 1000 for cotton making 61091000.

Click on the words "of cotton" and it brings up the VAT rate of 20% (the 0% is for children's clothes) and the import duty rate of 12%

Don't forget also to factor in the shipping costs and the handling charges which can range from £8 (Parcelforce non priority) to over £30 (couriers) on a small consignment.
