Hi, I have just purchased a armchair from China as a sample with the view of importing the item in bulk later.

the item will be flown to the uk by air cargo. When it arrives do i need a clearing agent at the airport or can i collect myself?
Thanks for reading,
Penderri

Hi - You will need a custom clearance agent to handle the clearance etc. Once the clearance has been completed & you have the release paperwork (and all charges have been paid) you can collect the shipment. Beware of the airline handling agent charges for private importations - they can sometimes add considerably to the cost. If you want to discuss in more detail, you can contact me at jerrydotmakcouriersatbtinternetdotcom

Hi Primar,
Thanks for the advise, after reading your post i called one of the clearing agents at Cardiff airport.
They say that it will cost around £90 to do the job for me plus any duty. all i need to do is send the the paperwork. Seems a bit steep as the chair only cost $100!
They also said that it would be a minefield if i try it myself!
Thanks again for the advice,
Alun (penderri)

Hi Alun,

As you only have a small shipment you will be paying minimum charges for the airline handling, clearance, documentation etc. The actual cost for a customs clearance would be the same for one chair or fifty chairs.

The more items you buy the lower the cost per unit will be.

If you do decide to place a bulk order and need assistance with the shipping, customs clearance etc, or general advice please feel free to contact us. We have been shipping from China since 1994 and have already worked with a number of other UKBF members.

Best regards,
Glen
