...because the less than intuitive interface is causing me to make a lot of mistakes, which I'm finding difficult to rectify. I should be clear, I'm not a professional in this stuff and find the jargon and assumptions made to be mystifying. I've tried reading the HMRC website but it isn't much help. Advice please. Tar.

Sage Payroll is, I believe, crap. If you understand payroll backwards and spend 6 months getting used to it, you may be able to use it.

As a matter of interest, why did you choose it?

    Hi Static

I've spent quite a bit of time over the last 6 months studying ICB Level 3 Diploma in Payroll Management, which has helped me understand that running Payroll on a 'DIY' basis is not the best use of an Entrepreneur's valuable time. Consider this carefully, because Outsourcing Payroll is minimal cost compared with the 'hassle factor' you are evidently experiencing.

The above opinion is irrespective of the Sofrware. I don't use Sage Payroll but based on other posts in this thread, it seems your choice of software may have exacerbated your learning curve requirement.

How many weekly and / or monthly payslips are you processing?

You could consider paying someone to sort your payroll for you.

I use Moneysoft and rate it highly.

My suggestion to help will depend on how many staff you have on the payroll and how often you are paying them. It may save you a lot of time and worry to outsource your payroll.

Thanks for all the replies. I think I'll try switching to Moneysoft. Any advice on a resource for getting a better handle on the whole business?

Moneysoft is great software but you still need some payroll knowledge and it may be better to outsource.

What system are you using for bookkeeping and how often are you maintaining the business records?
