If you had £100k in your bank account, what business would you love to open for a healthy profit?

Microbrewery. Or indeed anything that requires specialist knowledge and abilities that others do not have and provides people with something they want. People want beer.

I see far too many businesses that are struggling, that offer people something they just really do not want. If folks are not clamouring for what you have to offer, it ain't a business!

...something thats not just a love/hobby, but would also make a good return.

I think any business you start has to be something you love doing, even with £100k in your bank account. If it's something boring (to you) then you're going to burn out a lot more quickly, which is definitely not something you want when running your own business, especially during the start-up stage. Besides, there's no reason why you can't do something which you love and makes a good return. In fact I'd say that's often the route to the best return because not only are you going to work harder but you're going to know more about your industry etc before you even get started.

If you want the potential to make a good return on £100k doing something risky with a business you perhaps don't love so much, then invest in someone else's business ;)

I would become a Ltd company invest the £100k into the Ltd Company - then once it's gone do the spongebob plan and waheyyy!!! I've spent the £100k on kit to investigate the paranormal and it's sat in my garage written off as a bad debt...

Bob's your uncle... tally ho, pip pip - Pims and lemonade - arthurs seat, Fannys' your Aunt I'm better off with some nice CCTV - house alarm and top of the range black Range Rover.

:D

And they don't exist because you say so?

OK Micky - don't be such a killjoy... there are millions of reports of paranormal activity throughout the years so you're saying everyone who has reported something must be a nut job?

erm...

Supernatural powers have nothing to do with the Paranormal... Supernatural and Paranormal are two totally different scientific studies.

Seriously if you're going to take the mick out of something you clearly don't understand then don't make yourself look any more ignorant on the subject than you actually are...

Then again, carry on... it's quite amusing :D

I think you have to separate what has been observed and what can be explained. You would have a hard task explaining CERN to Newton who may have considered it Paranormal.

If I as a non-scientist observe something which I cannot explain that does not make me a nut.

If I cannot only not see it or explain it, like god, then I must be mad. Like the majority on this planet.

I'd never denounce anything, to be honest.

Around a hundred years ago, within the lifetimes of people still here today, the human race had its first manned flight of 12 seconds. E = mc2 had also just been discovered.

Go back a little bit further, and scientists thought that the sun orbited the earth.

One of the greatest mistakes humankind could ever make is to assume that its collective intelligence and understanding is greater than it really is. Our knowledge and tools are still extremely primitive.

Some believe we've "made it" when it comes to technology, but if the human race manages to exist for another thousand years, which is a blip in the cosmological timescale, they will see our modern methods of science as we see cavemen making fire for the first time.

What we understand of the universe could be all there is, or it could be far more bizarre than even our wildest imaginations. We are really in no position to say whatsoever, and it's foolish to think we are.

Some people believe a bloke fed 5000 people with a fish and a loaf and turned water into wine. Also one created the earth.

Spirits have caused me to see some unexplainable things.

Same, i'm glad there is someone else who believes the same. I guess it is something you have to personally experience in order to believe. TV shows make it look fake which ruins it.

Just looking for thoughts from the more knowledgeable (compared to me) folk on here :)

I think I will venture into real estate business as I heard that selling lots and houses are lucrative here in my country. With that amount of money, I think I'll be able to buy properties within the city area and sell it for a higher price say 20-30% more than the original price...:)

I think the best way to spend the money would be to invest into a food cart type of business. Things you will need would be a couple of food carts costing about 10,000 each which would include cooking facilities and then the cost of the food. So if you had 5 food carts which would cost in total about 50,000 and then say 1,000 for the food. You would still have a bit left over for unexpected events. Then you just go to local market fairs park these food carts, start cooking food, and then make your profit.

I would finally get my new business idea up and running. I know it would work but too tight to share my profits with angel investors. App development, initial marketing, etc would cost that much, but it would be enough for me to retire in Costa Rica in a few years. It is an app, that is the future I think.

I think £100k might disappear quite quickly if you're not careful. If it were me, I'd buy a small apartment outright (in another country, of course; UK is way too expensive for what you're getting), and then live cheaply while bootstrapping SaaS businesses. I'd aim for a new startup at least every month, though some product development teams are able to try a new idea every week. Once an idea has product-market fit, validated by paying customers (at this stage, pre-sales), then develop that idea further.
