Idiots guide to importing from China needed!

I've made some enquiries and I've possibly found a potential supplier in China for the goods that I need. In my case I've been enquiring about polypropylene webbing. I've established through a contact in China a supplier of the product.

Should I decide to proceed what are the step by step things that I need to consider/do?

For my initial order, I'm probably looking at a shipment of about 300kg. I'm currently considering whether to have the shipment in rolls which I would then have to make myself when they get to UK, or to get the units ready made in China.

Firstly, what is the procedure that I need to follow?

Who do I need to approach?

What are the costs associated with this small quantity likely to be? For instance if the goods are going to cost me £1000 approximately from the supplier FOB, what are they likely to cost me when I finally receive them?

What administration is required?

Who can make this as painless as possible?

How do I safely purchase the goods and pay for them? What is the best way to pay for them?

I'd appreciate any advice.

PP webbing is quite cheap in China and cost a little per yard.
So basically I guess it costs u little for custom.
For the freight to UK, go consult a shipping company. 300 kgs is too expensive for air freight so better go with cheaper shipping method like sea transportation.

For the payment, if u request a PMS color, you will have to go through a production so 30% deposit is what is always asked for the 1st time. For the balance, u better discuss with your supplier.

May be you should find a good agent in china, they will arrange everything well. 21 century columbus, your best choice.

Hi Spearmint.
Get an agent that will do everything for you.
There are many things that can go wrong, not least due to language and general business culture.
A good agent will get you different quotes from different suppliers and will act in your best interest. They will also do this regarding the shipping.
Avoid working with Trading companies if possible.
Use an agent with UK knowledge and an understanding of English culture.
You will find this will benefit you.
