Yes!

I got mine built for £50 for the backbone coding. I touched it up and made the GUI visuals look nice and made a website and voila one vb.net executable application.

Its brought me in several thousands pounds in the last 8 months

A simple app will take a developer 2 days to make - and if you use someone from a developing country such as India they are VERY cheap - you've got to remember their average salary for the year is only £2000!

My friend got a TEAM of developers to do his project for £500

Which is why i suggested using www.vworker.com - its similar to ebay. Put your project on their and the bids roll in. Choose someone whos got good feedback and off you go.

It is hard to give an estimate cost without knowing what sort of app you are after (Web/Desktop/Mobile etc). Best thing to do is to make a more detailed list of requirements and then speak to a few developers and get a quote. Even after getting recommendations, I would strongly suggest talking to the developer/team in depth and hear how they would plan to implement your solution.

mutasim is right. With a bit more detail a developer can work with you to define the exact business requirements you have and how to fulfill them so it adds really value to your business. I would be very wary of getting an application like this build for £50 or £100 by some inexperienced coder or someone in the East that will simply code what you ask them to code without much thought of usability or making the application future proof. I have see too many people waste their money on such projects where they have to throw it all away and ask me to develop the app from scratch.

I see from your website you use coders in India yourselves ;)
although we design and produce iPhone/iPad games, the coding for these games are handled by one of our partners in India

Which is what alot of UK software companies do - its cheaper to outsource it abroad and 'project manage' it and then charge the client full uk prices.

You've definitely got to have a thorough specification of what you want.

All i'm saying is that you can shop around and get something like this done very cheap. And from my experience the foreign coders are superb at coding - aslong as you get someone with a good feedback record they will look after you.

:) Very observant of you. Yes, in today's economy and with the technology available to us it makes sense to collaborate. We keep our overheads as low as possible and collaborate with other companies to offer a wide range of services and resources. We were in involved in a project recently that had three UK agencies, two companies in Belarus for coding, an Indian company coding and one Indonesian company modelling with us responsible for specifications, quality control and managing everything into existence. I would not want to imagine what the project would have cost if it was all UK based developers.

But even though we work with several companies in the East it takes a LOT of project management time to make sure everything remains on track. We do all the planning, specification and visual design ourselves. As you said, foreign coders are superb at coding (especially, in my experience, those in Belarus) but you have to know exactly what you want.

We write iPhone/iPad apps as well as "traditional" PC-based software for running small businesses.

The sort of project you're talking about needs a budget of £500 minimum. It's the sort of thing you could start small though and then bolt on new features in later versions if they become necessary.

If you'd like us to have a look at it, give me a shout and I can show you some of the things we've done before.

James

PS - For what it's worth, we write all our software right here in the UK. If you're trying to manage a software project properly, you need close contact with the people writing it!
