I see websites differently...!

Hi

I don't mean I see them differently in a spiritual way! I've a site that was updated by my web lady yesterday. However, I looked yesterday on home putah and laptop, and again this morning, and can't see the changes. However, my son (looking through internet explorer) can see them. I use AOL - is that where my problem is and if so, what can I do? I have a menu request page and wonder if that too isn't up to date through AOL.

I have deleted temp files as advised by web lady.

It's probably proxied on the AOL we proxies. The changes should tick through soon.

If you add ?somestuff to the end of the URL in the address bar, you may get a refreshed copy of the page

Sounds obvious, and I am sure you tried this, but you could always try clicking refresh on the browser.

It may be bringing up the old version from your hard drive.

I think Richard & Top Hat are right. I guess what AOL are doing is saving the page to their servers. Google offer a similar service now (called Web Accelerator), which can be a pain if you're waiting for changes. Only difference is Google are great and AOL suck big fat tomatoes.

NTL also do this in most areas, it's a right royal pain in the backside... Try telling a client that you have done the requested modifications to their website and then having to send screenshots to prove it - it makes you feel like a right prat :roll:

You can try pressing <CTRL>+F5... THIS SOMETIMES forces the cache to refresh :wink:

Another trick is to type the web address and add :8080 at the end - example = www.ukbusinessforums.co.uk:8080
This should bypass the cache which works on port 80 by using the the alternative port 8080 :wink:

BTW if you use a router, try rebooting it, as some routers come with their own cache (ie: their own little hard-drive where they store web pages etc). This can become more of a problem if you move a site from one domain to another. If you use a router, your DNS settings won't refresh until you kick it hard.

I had the same problems today I could see my updates my college couldn't even after hours the cache still returned the original info, my btopenworld account doesn't have any problems but cable seems to be a culprit (not to mention AOL) if it's really important move your isp.

The changes were made at least 30 hours ago. Anyone any idea how long it might take for them to show for me?

Way back in the early days of my website I discovered this problem with using the AOL browser. To view the website changes all I used to do was fire up IE and Hey Presto there were the changes.
Now use Firefox but still use AOL (I know its historical and cannot be bothered to change!!)l as ISP so don't see that problem at all.

ps it could take up to a couple of days to see the change using AOL browser.

Humm,

This is a major problem when you are looking at news sites. You wouldn't pay much for a 4 day old newspaper would you? You may want to make this clear to Mr AOL...

I'm not a fan of theirs BTW, as I've had shed loads of grief on the PC fix front as a result of their crap software.

It is the aol browser cache causing your grief, I've had before myself. As someone else is saying use intenet explorer or better still firefox.
