Hello All,

As a small business owner and putting everything else aside, would you to pay for a subscription (less than £20 per month) via Stripe or Paypal? Generally speaking, what would you prefer when signing up through a website?

Make everyone happy, offer both. This also minimizes your risks should one close your account for x reason. Credit cards directly on your website via Stripe and PayPal payments through PayPal.

We offer numerous gateways (PayPal, Skrill, Credit/Debit Card, BitCoin etc) and can say they're all being used. More choice for your clients, less risk for you.

I'd guess so many people have a paypal account these days, they're more likely to click on the paypal link than the stripe one. It depends who you are targetting. Joe Blogs may (like me) have never heard of of stripe before. If Stripe is new to the market, they need to do a hell of a marketing campaign to get known!

They are pretty popular albeit not as much as PayPal, more importantly they are growing fast.

Thing is, you might not have heard of Stripe but it is possible you've "used" them on a merchant website before as Stripe doesn't really have any branding on the front end (you normally see a credit card form integrated into a website or a popup interface). Also Stripe is more aimed at businesses where as PayPal is aimed for the masses (you don't get a "balance" you can send to other users).

But still, I stick to my original offer both and you should be fine.

I have both. I started off with Paypal to collect credit card payments, but got miffed at their monthly charge (that's so early 200s) & PCI compliance shenanigans (let's take more of our traders)...it also confuses punters when you use 'Paypal' to collect credit card payments.

I therefore got stripe.....it's excellent.

I'd say for collecting credit card payments, avoid Paypal ....but clearly you still need to offer Paypal 'traditional' (non credit card) as a payment option.

When I was looking at both I favoured stripe as it meant I could accept credit cards through my own website without a monthly fee, whereas with PP you had to pay monthly or direct your customers to a PP checkout.

Solution is as someone else said - offer both.

I have both paypal and card payments on our site (using GlobalIris)
Both are used a lot. Sometimes there is a majority on one or other but it almost evens out over time.

I would not go with just Paypal, as some people without accounts are unsure of it and do not like to use it as a card terminal(although it can be)

The downside, if all payments went through Paypal I would get a better fee rate.

Who are your customers? Which way are they likely to want to pay?

Paypal subscriptions are a bit of a nightmare if someone wants to cancel. If they don't do it, you cannot do it from your end and then they berate you for not cancelling when they let you know. It happened to me as a customer and the seller did not understand the systems nor advise me accordingly.
