HR Approach - Help needed!

Hi guys, just wondering if you can help. Im currently an HR student and doing a report, im nearly finished but stuck on one small part of the question.

Anyone any idea what a human resource approach is? do you think this simply means introducing a HR department, or is a HR approach something entirely different?

Well, its a case study on a company which currently has no HR department.

The first part of the question is to identify 'people management issues.' So i have picked out all of the issues, such as no training and development scheme in place etc.

then the last part of the question says 'outline the benefits of adopting a human resources approach'

thanx adam.

so things such as more standardised approach? - all 4 departments would operate in the same way. Therefore better recruitment and selection, and training and development practices, thus resulting in lower staff turnover, lower recruitment costs and more motivated staff?

assignments seem to have taken up most of my christmas, just need to get this last bit sorted out so i can get it out of the way and move onto my new semester topics and get back to work xx

yes, you would have an overall consistent approach in place along with policies that adhere to all the rquired legislation. Other positive outcomes include reduced conflict, grievances or disciplinaries, increased output from happier staff, and ultimately the bottom line is improved for the department and the business as a whole. Are you doing CIPD?

Thankyou for your help.

Im currently in my second year of a BA Hons degree in Business Studies with HRM. Love the course but just been having a bit of difficulty of with it of late - think I just need to cuy my part time work down a bit and devote more time to it. xx

Ho these are not necessarily the same thing.

A HR approach is recognising that people contribute something to the organisation. That is they are a resource like any other resource and need to be managed and invested in. The use of the PRIMO-F model is one that shows people in balance with the organisation as a whole - as does the BBS (Balanced Business Scorecard) and many other management models.

Certainly consistency in things like recruitment pay etc are valuable and should be encouraged - but not to the point of stifling innovation within smaller organisations.

HR departments are great when the business is larger and consistency is the name of the game - BUT HR departments often act as breaks for change and in many organisations cause many difficulties to adapting. It is a difficult balance.

I have worked in organisations with over 500 staff and no HR - line manager did it all - and it worked very well - I have worked with organisations employing 100 people and HR was 100% necessary for them. It is all down to the quality of the managers.

Just because departments do things the same way does not mean best... often doing things the same way is to the lowest common denominator - not benchmarking the best! Its all about implementation.

All the HR and management theories in the world are fine - but most fail to take account of culture. management style and competence!
