Alter a template?

In my fight to learn a little about websites I am considering downloading a template to 'mess about with'

Do you require any specific software in order to alter a template?

Hey Pete, as long as you understand the difference between WYSIWYG and code view, and are prepared to work with code view for altering the HTML and CSS, you can get by on a number of open source programs.

Notepad++ is good for editing. I'd recommend having the following setup:

firefox browser window with firebug plugin installed
notepad++ window with html source on display
notepad++ window with css source on display

then make little tweaks as you go. The HTML and css file can live on the same folder in your my documents. Each time you make a change hit refresh in the browser to see it reflected. Add images and learn about relative paths.

Good luck!

Are you seriously suggesting that there is not a wordpress theme that looks similar to what the op would want?

The op is after a template to "learn website design" and not put a website online, the best way for someone to learn is to dissect a pre-built template and change parts to see what they do.

WordPress will probably be beyond the OP's scope at the moment as it's a little more complicated than just changing a couple of things.
