Hey everyone!

I have recently been thinking about starting up my own Night Club. But i was wondering if anyone would have any clues as to the rough cost it would be just to get the property/get it started or for the whole thing?

Also any tips on what i would need etc

Thank you! :)

You would need some industry knowledge, without that you are bound to end up spending more than you need too!

Have you worked in clubs/bars? Any management experience in either?

An awful lot of money, unless you are thinking of you and a few mates in the garage.

How can anyone give you any ideas, it is all down to property, if you own or rent the building - the size of the building, the condition of the building, alterations, fire regulation, insurance, etc etc etc!

Come on OP, do some homework - you want the business!

Vanman, Sorry if i dont know every little detail. Dont take it out on me!
I thought this website was supposed to help, not help degrade people.

Sorry OP, but you do not seem to know any details!

You post, you are thinking of opening a night club (not easy) and then ask how to go about acquiring a license, and where to obtain one from.

Just what thought have you put into your intended business idea.

Can you really not see how you come across?

Do some homework, see if you really are able to do what you wish, and then come back to the board with more mature questions in respect of your intended business.

The only person degrading you - is you!

Yes, to put it quite bluntly, you shouldn't be looking at doing something like this yet if you need to ask such basic questions. It's very expensive and very complicated. Actually I'd recommend at least a few years experience working in a night club just to get the feel for it before you commit yourself to anything.

A lot of your questions can be answered with some Google searching. You should use that to discover most of what you need to know, and then some experienced folk on here can top you up with the rest.

You never know though, someone might pop along with some rough figures. I think there was a thread made a while ago about the same issue (the one vanman posted).

C'mon guys.. don't be hard on the OP. Just get him the licences, find him..nay, better still.. buy him the property.. furnish it for him.. get him the stock.. of booze, girls whatever...

Ain't difficult really is it.

Thats what forums are for.. one nice big helpful community

And before you criticize him , you should walk a mile in his shoes. That way, when you do criticize him, you are a mile away, and you have his shoes.

:D;)

It is not my place or intention to degrade you or anyone else.
I am more than willing to help people who are realistic and have some sensible comments, ideas and thoughts.
Your comments so far reflect badly on you and show a total lack of self motivation, planning and even the inability to use Google to answer what are very very basic questions.
Did you even look at the thread I so thoughtflly posted up for you?

Good point, especially as they won't grant a license to anyone unless that person has relevent industry experience at a managment level at very least. I'm guessing you dont, since I know that and I only worked a few years doing very occasional bar-work in a pub!

But the real problem is not money or red tape, If someone gave you £250k tomorrow there is every chance it would still be impossible to open a nightclub. They can exist only in freak parts of town, where it just so happens no-one lives very near, and no ones adjoining business can realistically claim the noise will damage their business... If you looked at most town centres, probably less than 1% of the space could ever get planning for a nightclub. Difficult if the town you are in already has nightclubs in those spaces.

You would do much better to find a club for sale, and run it for 6 months with the current owners overseeing things and then purchasing it. This way you would get the license into your own name with a lot less effort. Also you can answer all your questions by finding an old club for sale that could use a re-launch.

I know how to start in a nighthclub - spilling a pint or being sick on someones shoes usually does it.

Seriously, contact your local council for details of their licencing policy, planning guidelines and other relevant guidance.

A cheaper option to get a club started could be to find a landlord of a pub who has a nice big function room - Saves the cost of finding your own premesis, you can rent it on a per night / per week basis and cut a deal on bar take / supplies. I used to go to a great club above a pub in Portsmouth - live music + cheap beer = winner!

I used to do the accounts for a club. It's a hard market to crack and if you try and get into a major city you could be treading on some significant toes and you have to be aware that being flavour of the month one day can turn on you fairly soon. Your income will be the door and drinks but you could see your customers spending the bulk of their money in your toilets whilst all you get to sell is a bottle of Evian.

you also have to bear in mind that sometimes, you are relying on getting all your income in 2 five hour slots a week so making that building work for you for a full week and some daytime revenues. Even in large cities, I've noticed less people go out and with more clubs chasing fewer punters, it's hard.

I've seen places setup for as little as £5k, but it all depends on the size of the venue, and how aggresive you tackle the promotion.

A 1000 capacity nightclub for example is going to require atleast £10-20K is sound and lighting, and that's scrimping on cheaper gear.

Glassware and stock is negoiciable with whichever brewery yout tie to.. Carlsberg, Inbev etc, can do Trade loans if you can provide decent business plans, forecasts etc.. but experience is usually required.

More importantly it's not the opening costs you need to worry about, it's the on-going costs.

2 nights of opening for a 1000 capacity club would need 11 door staff (2 for the first 100 people, 1 for every 100 after by law). 1 head doorman at £25ph, and 10 @ £15ph (approx). 4-10 bar staff at minimum wage, DJ at bare minimum £100 per night, and that's going to be an unknown young lad. If your looking at maybe top trance, electro, hard dance etc DJ's expect to pay upward of £1000ph.

As said the ingoing costs are the least of you worries. Try and work out what you'd need to do stay open first, then see if the ingoing costs are worth it all.

I am a student myself and I know I drink loads before I go out and spend less when I am at the clubs.

With all the credit crunch crisis my non student friends have adopted this approach too.

I would thinking trying a nightclub at the moment depending on area is an extremely tall ask for people with experience never mind with out.

What area are you looking at doing this, could potential help you with DJ's

I have found one of the best potential buildings in Cardiff to become a multi complex business. I was thinking nightclub/bar, restaurant and gym (for some reason a gym would fit in there as well and it's a good business to start up).. IF ONLY the euromillions winners of £160million were active on this forum ;) breaks my heart whenever I drive past it because of the potential it has!!!!!! LOL

Find out which agency in your state grants liquor licenses and what the requirements are to obtain one. (Know beforehand that getting a liquor license is not going to be easy, and that there are usually strict conditions attached). In some states, a liquor license can also be VERY expensive and depends on the type, size, and location of the nightclub, the type of alcoholic beverages you're going to sell, and the hours during which you plan to operate.
