Hi everyone, I'm new here, I can't say that I've extensively searched the site, so forgive me if this has been asked before. I'm looking forward to learning a lot here and developing some creativity and some motivation from the other members.

I would like to get into importing, I have some ideas, and I've been in contact with some people on the ground in other countries, but I'm a bit clueless as to the method of importing, I know there are certain companies, but as my start up money is a bit limited, I'd like to do as much as I can by myself (it is also a skill that I would be useful to me).

So if anyone could provide me with information about shipping containers, the 'how' as well as the available sizes, prices, how to find out how much tax would be paid on various products etc. that would be really helpful. A link to a thread where this has been discuss or a website that explains it is just as good.

Thanks a lot.

    Hi,

Much will depend on the size of the orders you wish to ship. For smaller ones, your supplier will be able to give you a price to ship by courier. For larger orders, seafreight is your cheapest option. You can get a quote from a UK based freight forwarder from FOB overseas port to UK door. They will handle all customs formalities for you.

your question is a bit too wide to be able to offer any useful advise really.

you get 20ft and 40ft containers but the price will vary massively depending on where in the world you want to ship from. Same goes for tax, you will pay 20% VAT on everything but the duty tarrif will vary massively depending on the class of goods.

You basically have 2 options, you arrange a freight forwarder in country of origin or you arrange a freight forwarder here. Both have pros and cons.

If you are just starting out, you should learn to crawl before you walk. Container loads are for importers who have some idea what they are doing not for newbies.

You could try total DIY importing, with the small amount of helpful information posted on forums, and learn from your mistakes. Make sure you discard all the misinformation posted by opportunists and importing gurus-in-training.

If you want some examples of shocking misinformation posted by these amateurs I will be happy to post some quotes.
