how to rank better on maps

When you do a local biz search google displays a map before the listings and my dog walking biz ranks fine for my village on google maps but for my adjoining town I dont rank well on the maps at all even though I am second on the listings beneath the map. The maps display only that towns businesses, even those that have closed their business years ago but have still kept it on google.....I dont get it. My site is optimised for that area... I am second for that areas term and Im guessing location is pretty much everything, yet a dog walker from another area ranks on my local areas map even though they have an outdated one-page basic website, made from a website builder and have stopped posting on their social media. So any 'good' tips for getting higher on the local map listings that appear before the search results for local business searches?

You are right — actual proximity is one of the most important factors. Have you also added the areas that you service? If not, search "add service areas gmb" for instructions.

You also mention that some of your competitors' businesses are closed. If that's the case, I suggest that you flag their business profiles as permanently closed using the "Suggest an edit" feature of the map listings.

Aside from this, you should also you have lots of up to date citations on other sites. Adding accurate business information to directories can improve your maps rank.

Remember too that Google shows results based on where you are physically when searching. So one set of results when you use your computer from home, a different set when you use your mobile when you are in the neighbouring town. Keep your own GMB listing up to date by posting text or photos and ask clients to post comments too. Each time you get a comment (G will email you) always post a reply to the comment, regardless of the comment is positive or negative.

Google Business spot runs well if:
1. Set up the Business correctly like - area of service or if it has an office, add the address, correct contact data, original unique description etc. When you choose de name do NOT use the website or the company name. I usually prefer to use for name the keywor1s itself. For example one of my websites: Computer Services London, or Laptop Services London, whatever, depends on the word and clients you want to focus on. There is a section that you can app few keywords, dont miss that part, it is important. You can use the Services Section as well, choose more than on service.
2. Set up the Google Business Website, actually helps for ranking the Business spot, and your original website, where the publications will link to.
3. Make posts, add services, post photos. If you have other Google Acc ( wife, kid or friend ones ), use them to make first reviews and upload photos from those profiles. PS Not for all business types this will be suitable, but... You still can try to do something about that.
4. Share the spot, invite people to make reviews etc. If you have Facebook Page invite the people from the page to like other reviews and also post reviews.
5. Add posts with videos if you can.

Actually, all of that and if you make posts every week first you will grow up at local maps, then other areas you choose in the Business setup that you provide services in, etc.a

Basically,
lie, cheat, possibly break the law and risk any other businesses you have associated with that account.

Not saying it doesn't work, but make people aware of what you are doing.
What do you mean by that? Actually, Google autocorrected a few of my businesses, changed the name of those and left only the names as I say. For example, the name of my PC Repair shop was "Computer Services London PLd PC Services", google removed that and left Computer Services London. I tried to correct it a few times, the result was the same after a while........ So i left it like that and the result was better.
