We are trying to increase our traffic, and i would like to know, what is the best way to promote a news item. So for example, if we ran a story saying david beckham was going to play for QPR because he wanted to get back into the England team, what way would you promote this article before the news got old.

We have good traffic at the moment, but we are looking at ways to increase our traffic especially for news worthy articles

any help would be great.

I never create articles solely for SEO purposes, if you create an article just to rank for an SEO term then you will struggle to find somewhere to publish it to (except for the millions of article directories out there which would probably harm your SEO efforts).

Post it on Social Media and make sure you have "share" buttons at the bottle of your article (I assume its on a blog?) so that people who view it can share it around their network.

Get on Twitter, start engaging and networking and start publishing your articles on there also.

what i mean as i think a lot of people have misunderstood me is, if we write an article on our magazine site, so for an example, if we wrote an article about david cameron was stepping down from no 10 downing street (we wish) then we would want to try and promote that article straight away. We would want to promote the article and let as many people as possible know about our latest article.

So basicaly what we are trying to do is, we want to drive as much traffic as quickly as possible for our latest news stories on our magazine website.

any help would be great.

Some of the previous answers suggest some pr distribution related tips, but I guess you're asking a different thing. I assume you have a news site and you want more traffic via your highly-dynamic content.

First, think how you can attract traffic through organic search. Have keywords in mind when you craft titles for your news. Apply to submit your site to Google News. Work on growing authority of your site (i.e. build links) so that your news articles would rank higher that similar articles from other sites.

On the social media side, promote your content with all kind of social outlets possible: twitter, facebook pages, google plus pages, google communities, linkedin groups. This will also bring you some traffic, especially if you won't spam people but rather seek engagement. But I should say it's a great amount of work, and your costs on social media management vs traffic gains might not be worth it.

If you want to promote it and it to appear on quality publications then you will need to build up relationships with those publications (share their content) and submit it to them explaining why it is relevant to their readership. Plus sharing on your own social channels, asking your internal employees to also share it/ like it etc will help spread the word.

Best of luck

What you should also consider is linking to it from other media, such as your website, using appropriate anchor texts which include the keywords you want to promote.

I take it you're using your keywords in headlines, title tags and meta descriptions? And are you using 'teaser texts' or news abstracts somewhere on your website or blog which can attract your readers' attention?

Doing this along with the social media activities, you should get your news out there.

For such articles, your key is Social Media like Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, etc.

Actually it is simple to classify your target audience based on the kind of news you are talking about. Your audiences that could be a strong source of word-of-mouth spread are available on different Social Media platforms. All you need to do is pick the right platform, at the right time, for the right news.

Other platforms on the web, like news pages and popular search engines, are also useful.

Personally PRWeb is one of the best out there or you can use a PR agency to aggregate to more popular news website; it depends on your news article and how much of it is actually news and not just promotion. You can also go down the free route such as social media, forums and cross linking on your website.

For traffic, new posting in High PR Article Directory or press release site might be a very good idea, but if you are looking for traffic, you may want to try some offline marketing techniques as well.
i.e. Flyers, posters, banners and providing some promotional materials give away to drive some decent traffic.
