A bank transfer is about as safe and secure as it gets.

What issues are you having with international transfers?

That’s different. You asked about bank transactions. Trusting the seller to dispatch the goods is about checking who you are buying from. Using sites like eBay or Amazon give you a lot of protection.

maybe some kind of escrow system? If you order and pay via things like alibaba, from China, then there is an element of protection - still not cast iron, but it works well for me. Worst case is always you to them and a bank payment. Once you have the money, then really you are on your own.

What are you trying to buy? I am in a similar situation. I will look to spend ~£4k initially, if all seems legit I was thinking of ordering 15x as much, but maybe flying out to see it prior to transferring the cash - not ideal given flight times and likely location. Separately im asking a friend who orders from China all the time how he does it and if he uses a shipping agent. I will keep you updated if interested.
