How to invoice without a registered company?

Hi there,

I made a 4 hours job in graphic design and I do not have a registered company.
I would like to do an invoice but obviously I need a company to do that.

I´m just wondering whether or not is there a way to invoice these 4 hours without register a company. I would like to pay the taxes but I do not want to set up a company, because it was a kind of favour the job mentioned above and I´m working for another company. I´m happy with the company I´m working for, and I´m not looking for being a freelancer, just keen to do it legally for that special work I made.

Is there any way to register a business or self-employed for just a day or a special work?

Any help would be so much appreciated.

Kind regards,

Josh

You don't need to be a limited company to raise an invoice.

Many businesses operate as sole traders.

If it's a one-off, you don't even need to be a sole trader.

You're confusing registering a business as a company, i.e. at Companies House, with registering for personal tax on sole trader or casual income with HM Revenue & Customs.

If it's a one-off, all you need to do is declare the income to HMRC - you may not even have to complete a tax return. Just give them a ring and ask them.

As for raising an invoice, all you need is a piece of paper with your name and address, the customers name and address, date, a description of the work, and the amount to be paid. You may wish to add your bank details or other payment instructions.

    Hello Philip,

I have a question, a friend has asked for my services as a consultant and requested an invoice.
I am a foreigner student currently studying in UK for just 2 more weeks before I graduate and leave the country.
The invoice is for a company in Italy. I don`t have a VAT, and I do have national insurance because I did an internship but it is not related to this.
Is there any tax obligations for UK or Italy? can I send an invoice just like that? It would include my name, the clients name and address, the concept, the amount and my bank details.

    thank you for your help!

You can invoice as a private individual - it's simply an official bill, a request for payment for goods or services rendered. If you sell a second hand car, you write out an invoice, and then write paid on it! Microsoft Word and Excell have plenty of example templates in them.

Unless there are tax complications, just write one out.

I agree, all you need is a receipt featuring yours and their details (you can find many templates in Microsoft Word) and that should be fine. You only need to raise an official VAT invoice if you are VAT Registered (not necessarily ltd company) and pay VAT.
You can easily register as a sole trader (self employed) online and submit the earned amount with your next tax return.

    thanks!
according to gov.uk it says I have to put the company name and details. As you said that is not my case and therefore it is just a matter of sending an invoice with nothing other than the details of the company and myself, plus amount and concept, correct?
Being foreigner and executing this job abroad gives me any tax obligations in UK or elsewhere?
I am not planning to register in UK unless I have to.
