Given that you calculate what you pay yourself, HMRC can only know what you have paid, They do not do the calculation and ask for a certain amount.

If you think you have overpaid (i.e., paid more than your accounts say you should) then look in your accounting system for the VAT return calculation and compare it to what you actually paid from your bank statement.

HMRC also know if you have overpaid, because you submit what is due and then receive a payment. So I don't know if there is already a positive balance there with them. I'm sure in the past you could check. In the past, if I overpaid, I sometimes got the overpayment refunded, but other times they didn't. Perhaps they removed the ability to view a balance online so that they can keep your money in their coffers if you overpay.

If there is an error in my accounts, then I might have overpaid and money is sitting with HMRC.
Then check your accounts. Is there an error?

It's YOUR accounts that generate the VAT return that YOU send to HMRC and YOU make the payment.

Their system shows if you owe them, but it doesn't show if they owe you!
Unless you paid a different amount to what was on the VAT return, they CANNOT know you have under/overpaid unless they start an investigation. They only know the amount on the return and the amount you paid them.

Did you pay a different amount to what you declared on your return?

What's the real problem you are tyring to solve?
