Much of it depends on your business. why not use the twitter search option to see if people are talking about your business and or business sector.

I have always thought restaurants could use social so much more than they do.

It is good for interacting with customers and building relationships with them. It is also good for your website SEO if you have a strong presence on social media.

What I would say is, don't make profiles on twitter, facebook etc if you aren't willing to dedicate the time to them. Even an hour a day would make the difference.

Before any strategy you need to know if you/somebody from your company will l spend any time on those resources, if it's going to be like a job
or not. If not - strategy or not it will not bring much results.

And if somebody is going to do it as a job, then it depends on what goals you want to achieve with Social Media. It will defenitely bring some traffic to your website.
