How to diagnose failing PC

EDIT: Incidentally the F12 tests didn't turn up anything wrong.[/QUOTE]

Hence looking more lke a software driver issue the Dell diagnostics are usualy fairly accurate at diagnosing hardware faults. But sounds like your PC is working for now which is the main thing..thats until it blue screens again ;)

Random failures are usually caused by faulty memory. Windows is really sensitive to that so it'll crash if there's a problem reading/writing certain sections of memory. You might want to try getting it cleaned up. If a lot of dust gets into the memory slots it sometimes blocks the electrical contacts between the slot and the chip. Bad PSU or Voltage fluctuations can also affect your machine so you could try getting a UPS.

Given it's a factory assembled machine, I don't suppose there could be a problem with the PSU being rated for a lower power than required.

Yes some random errors can be caused by bad memory thats why if you had of read the entire post you would have known he has already run the Dell Diagnostics which does a memory check. Sorry but im not sure you know what you are taking about I have never heard of dust getting in memory slots in my 15 years of IT experience surely if the RAM had been seated correctly in the first place it would be physically impossible for dust to get in there!

If there was a bad PSU I doubt very much he would be getting blue screens.
Talking of buying a UPS to fix a blue screen is just crazy talk sorry.
