How to determine purchase price from manufacturers?

Hi, I'm new here. We're designing our own range of clothing. We've found a manufacturer but they have asked what price per unit we'll pay them so they can suggest fabrics to us. I can work out the typical RRP and from there I can work back to come up with our wholesale list prices. However, I just don't know what prices to start with to suggest to the manufacturers. What is a typical margin for that price for clothing? 50%, 100%? I don't want to go in too low and be offered something of poor quality and I don't want to go in too high. Any advice would be appreciated. If its simply a case of working out my costs and choosing a margin i'd be happy with then fine but I just wondered if there's a normal % we should expect to make?

Thanks

Tara

Hi Boxby

Thanks for replying so promptly. I have an idea of what I want but I don't know the margins to determine the typical price to pay the manufacturers to then know what fabric options we have. If I know the usual margin I can determine a price then try to obtain the best fabrics for those prices. I don't think it matters which way round to approach it!
