How to activate Presto! Scan Buttons?

I am a not very competent user of an Epson GT 1500 scanner and a bar with scan buttons pops up when I switch it on with 7 buttons. When I click onto the OCR button a message comes up saying that the scanner is not connected. Could anyone please tell me how to get these buttons working.

Have you tried the old cliche of switching it off and on again? There is an online manual here
