How To Accept credit & Debit Card Payments?

We have been advised that we should invest in a card reader so that we can accept credit and debit card payments. We are not in a fixed location so the reader would need to come with us wherever we go.
I have heard that charges are around 5% of the billed amount.

Can anyone advise where to get one, how long it takes to setup. Whether we would be bound to any contract.
Obviously I am looking for the cheaper option, I know I could go to our bank but I am guessing their charges will be high.

Well we do jobs at customers premises so I guess ideally 1 card reader per vehicle (x 4) would be ideal but they could always phone the office and someone could take payment (if you can do it without the cardholder being present).

Just my opinion but I think I would be careful about having card readers in your vans 1) somebody could break in and steal it 2) how well do you know / trust your employees, what if they take the card details - it would be your business that would suffer.

I think if you had 1 card reader in your office at least you know whats happening with the card details.

These payment gateways are easy to implement. Just get hold of an website developer who will do that for you. If you need suggestions, I can recommend sboed.com. I believe they should be able to do it for you.
