How much to build a very simple phone app?

Hi,

Just a quick question, I (like everyone else) have an idea for an app. It's out of my skill area, so I need some cost advice.

The app needs to act as a shortcut, with some other functionalities to be discussed with a developer.

I can't go into more detail for obvious reasons, and I'm just researching right now, but an idea of how much should I be looking to spend would be a help.

Thanks, B.

You could consider developing one yourself, with dare I say, the latest version of Dreamweaver if you have some time and patience. At work we are currently evaluating Sencha Touch and PhoneGap for our own use, but these aren't novice friendly.

Alternatively you could approach a third party development company. I would shy away from anything off-shore as they may be cheap, but may let you down further down the road where your ideas can sometimes exceed their skills. A quick search on Google for mobile app development has brought up a fair number of alternatives with this one catching my eye - appdevelopersuk(dot)com. Local to myself is a development company who seem approachable although I've never used them personally - fathomgroup(dot)co(dot)uk.

Hope this helps,

As with building a website, it's impossible to give any kind of figure without some kind of idea as to what you need. If it is commercially sensitive, we always sign an NDA with our customers so they can divulge their requirements in detail without worrying their idea will be stolen.

We develop apps from scratch rather than using tools like Phone Gap. We believe this gives the greatest flexibility and polish to the app and doesn't run the risk or somehow being blacklisted by a whim of Apple in the future (in terms of iOS devices).

We've just released an iOS App for the NHS which links in with a CMS website which both the customer and we are really proud of. It wasn't expensive and built from the ground up. Happy to talk more if you wish. :)

You can get an idea if you look at websites like odesk.com elance.com vworker.com - just look for similar projects and look at the bids.
I would suggest you should look into something like phoneGap or rho mobile, where you can develop once* and deploy to multiple target platforms.
Regards, Mike

*develop once is probably not entirely true as you have to tweak each platform and find a lowest common denominator in terms of the APIs supported on all of your desired platforms
