Whilst Visa and MasterCard transactions average between 1-3% (depending on trading history, business nature, turnover etc) Amex transactions tend to be nearer 4-5% certainly starting out. As with all acquiring services you should be able to renegotiate rates after your initial contract period depending on how much you have put through.
The best thing to do is either contact the acquirer you are using for Visa/MC for the Amex rates or contact Amex directly.
