How hard would it be?

How hard would you find it financially if your business was to go bust and you were to work for someone else?

Most jobs out there don't pay well at all. Your lucky if you get over £8 an hour.

To get a really good wage you really need to work your way up or be qualified from in your teens.

Lets say your lucky and get £10 an hour.

You work Monday to Friday 9 - 5 but only get paid 35 hours after lunch break took off.

35 x £10 = £350 - 15% taxes = 297

- Lunches 10
- travel 30

= £257 per week or £1028 per month

then - £450 for rent and council tax = £578

You would also not be entitled to Jobseekers which I believe is £284 per 4 weeks.

So really by working full time for £10 an hour instead of sitting on your ass doing nothing your only £294 per month better off. So you have really worked for 31.84 per hour

Guess with your mindset... you are not looking for a job!!
so.. your other "interview" thread was pointless.

I cant even comprehend employment I dont even know what it feels like and I expect most lifetime self employed and directors on here have the same opinion.
If your pondering over weather its better to may be get an employed job your probably halfway there already

I am totally unemployable now. just lost the knack of taking orders and not working on my own ideas. I hated it and could never go back. Even when i went under i started again within a month on something new.
However i would do anything to get the first couple of grand even if it was stacking shelves but from then on i would quit and start up again.
But then i look at some of my employees hassle free life, getting a cheque at the end of the month and not worrying if the van breaks down. Nope still cant do it.

I doubt very much that I could get back on a career ladder now; not that I could handle employment
However I am aware that if I had stayed employed, and taking into account fringe benefits I would be significantly financially better off than I am today.

Do I care? Only when I'm really self-pitying.

This is a genuine question. If you yourself would be financially better off being employed, how can you be a mentor for start up businesses? Surely if you cant work out how to make money from self employment for yourself, you cant tell others how to either?

As I said, I ask as i'm genuinely interested, not because i'm having a bad day and feel like a bit of trolling.:)

Firstly because I absolutely believe that setting up a business is about far more than just earning money. I walked away from my last business which was getting a bit corporate (I was one of 5 owners) because I wanted a small more friendly environment.

Unless someone has a big business plan, they should think twice if they think it's just about earning more money.

Secondly It depends when & how rewards are delivered; I spent many years earning more than my banking contemporaries; now I am in my 50s they get the 'life service' benefits of long holidays, lots of sick leave and early retirement. I could of course have put money away for these.

If it was all about money, being self employed, I would never have done it !!

Although my one shop is closing, I dont regret doing it, life is too short - I would work, cleaning loos, anything, if it meant putting food on the table...

Its interesting the way we are all self employed people on this forum but have very diverse experience.

My take on this topic is the complete opposite of yours. I wouldn't earn anywhere near as much as an employee, so one of the main benefits of self employment for me is the financial benefit.
