How do some websites make money?

We generally know how the big co's make money - and with all the recent press reports it kind of has me thinking when Im on a site, how they make money...

I have just filled out some details on www.iammoving.com for a relative and I asked myself the same question...I couldnt really see much obvious stuff so I checked them out....there figures show they are worth over £1.1m..........how??? What am I obviously missing???!

They will be an affiliate/broker with all the services they're recommending to you. So the energy companies for example, you go on there and "switch to a better provider" and they will take a 'finders fee' if you will.

Also, in the website footer:

iammoving.com Limited is an introducer appointed representative of First Complete Limited, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Services Authority (FRN:435779) for mortgage and non-investment insurance advice.

They will charge the partners for each record (as they have potentially saved them money and potentially identified an upsell opportunity). It would seem that the web company also use the data to gather leads for mortgage and insurance. These leads are worth £££'s each, so it is easy to see how they make their money.

I believe MoneySavingExpert.com made Martin Lewis a millionaire when he sold it as it takes in tens (hundreds?) of millions on referral fees alone.

Ahhh.....thank you for that! So basically all of the traffic they et through moving house is typically filtered for referal dollars! Nice!

here is often a link at the bottom of sites that says affiliates or become an affiliate and you just sign up get a banner and stick it on your site
if somebody clicks through and buys or acts then you get a commission
some last 24 hours some last 30 days

These types of sites will have special relationships, it's very hard to earn from just placing banners on your site. They'll have a true partnership with access to code that works different they a basic aff script.

They also have the benifit of being able to collect the personal details and xcross sell those to those.

And Mark started his business when a member here, it wasn't his first either he had a couple before it
