How do I sell advertisement/sponsorship onto a website?

I’ve been cold calling relevant companies, identifying the correct decision maker, presenting the benefits, giving all the information; but can’t seem to get any real interest. The rates are correct for the number of users etc. obviously, I’m missing something important here as I’ve successfully tele-sold advertisements into publications in the past.

Any help would be great!

Hi OldStone

One of the best ways I've seen website sell sponsorship is that they run an advert free of charge for a few days. This means they can call the prospect armed with some info on how much traffic the free ad sent them. If you send good traffic, its hard to turn down - if you don't they are probably not the right prospect.

Do you NEED to sell directly? Can you not just use adsense to monetize it? If you've got the traffic you'll make the money.

It seems old school to pay just to have your advert on a website these days, paying for actual clicks seems easier to measure in terms of success.
