How difficult is it to build a fully functional comparison site?

Hi All,

So I have had this business idea for some time but never had the knowledge or capital to go ahead with it. I have so much passion for this idea and I am crying to make a start.

Does anyone have any advice on getting companies on board to have their products featured and how extensive a fully functional comparison site is to create and where on earth I could start?

If anyone is able to offer any advice <removed> then I would be most appreciative and it's not another bloody Go Compare car insurance site, it's much more interesting. Something to really get your teeth into!

Well you could potentially get this done for not too much, but generally you're talking about tens of thousands of pounds if you want it developed for you.

Having said that, you could probably get a developer/designer to make you a comparison site for a lot less.

I'd look to start with an open source software base, to reduce cost and ensure you're working from a sound foundation.

As for getting companies involved, just contact them. Drum up and gauge interest. A lot of companies offer affiliate links, so that's an easy way to monetise your traffic to them. If you then drive some notable traffic, you could look to negotiate a custom arrangement.

And if you need any help with hosting then we're happy to help.

I hope that helps. Good luck!

If you want something unique, don't use open sourced project, as many others are probably using the same one and the final result will not be unique. No matter which way you go with the development, have in mind that the real work starts after the program is complete. To become live one idea needs a lot of investment in link building, quality content, and probably ads.

    Hi Jat33,

I agree with codefish's comments. Our sister company did a similar project for a client. The easy part is building the website. The hard part is afterwards, persuading visitors to come to your website. This takes a lot of hard work, time and patience. Unless you signup VC's to hand over tons of cash! :)

    Depends on the product.......

I could compare 10 ***** enlargement pills, and I would be classed an affiliate.

Comparing 10 gym classes I could be an affiliate.

Comparing 10 TVs I could be an affiliate.

But then there is offline business/partnership
