How can I ...

I am looking at making a website for our village church - for fundraising purposes, not for getting funds directly from the website - but to promote our fundraising efforts - publicise any fundraising activities we are planning, put up pictures of work needing doing and work done, that sort of thing.

Of course if possible we do not really want to splash out for a new hosting package and I am tasked (as I am on the fundraising commitee) with looking into what we can get for very little or no outlay !
(Us villagers have to pay for anything ourselves as the church is 'redundant' from the C of E - we have £20,000 + to find over time !)

I find plenty of places using Google that will let us set up a 'free' website - with their adverts and little control over layout.
Plenty of charity funding websites that will give you a website for a fee, plastered with adverts that if a sale comes from anyone clicking on them you earn a % and so do they.

But we want one just publicising our aims and events and how we are doing.

We have a facebook page - but it is quite limiting in what content you can put on there and there is little control over what is posted on it.

So -

1. Does anyone know of a genuinely free - non advert plastered website provider ? I doubt it.

2. If we already have a website for something entirely different, for example my own one, is there any way of creating seperate pages that can use the existing site but appear to be a seperate site ?

Meaning people would not have to type Eg. dorsetlockdoctor etc then find a link from a locksmith site to the church site, but could type in something like an actual url eg churchfundraisingsite .co.uk but this would go to the already existing site.

Thus utilising something already paid for.

Hi Gerry,

You could utilise your existing hosting, but you'd need to purchase a domain name. You could then set that domain up to point to the pages set-up on your existing site, you could do it so that the main web address is masked so that users don't see that the pages are on a separate site too.

I'd be happy to set this up for you and can offer the domain (.co.uk) for £10 for two years.

PM me if you want to discuss in more detail.

Not one worth using, no.

Yes, usally called something like "add on domains" in your existing hosting plan

but could type in something like an actual url eg churchfundraisingsite .co.uk but this would go to the already existing site.
Exactly, and if you dont already have the domain, we can help for £5.95+vat per 2 years :D

Is I know, Google offer hosting for small sites for free. But you need to find and purchase domain name (something like dorsetvillagechurch.co.uk - it's available
and costs $8.88/yr).

If you need more help/information from me please contact me directly by skype: gennadii.miroshnychenko or by mail gm(at)western.kiev.ua

Best wishes!

The cheapest/easiest way would be set up a subdomain on your hosting account, for example church.dorsetlockdoctor.co.uk
Then, buy the domain name e.g. dorsetchurch.org seperately, and set the name records to point at the created subdomain.
That way people would type in dorsetchurch.org and would go straight to your subdomain without ever really knowing that it was a part of your main site.

Another option worth considering is opening a wordpress account (free) at wordpress.com

You can then set up a free website that's easy to configure and update yourself. Your url will be yourchurchname.wordpress.com although if you want to you can buy a domain name and point it to your wordpress site (wordpress may levy a small charge for this).

There are lots of free templates available, some of which are quite good quality.

Good luck.

my suguestion is to set up a subdomian - like suguested before. yourchurch.yourcurrentdomain.co.uk for example.

I would then look at installing a wordpress site at this location. If you know whay you are doing this wont cost you anything at all.

If you will need it setting up for you I am happy to provide you with a quote. It wont be very much at all as its a pretty quick job.

you will have complete control over your site then, with no adverts

hey,
if you want to build a site for your church, i highly recommend wordpress. It is very easy to manage it (add/change content etc.). There are many free themes which you can find, but I can give you a name of a premium one, it is beautiful, and very suitable for a church website. Google for "Studiopress Outreach Theme".
