Hi
If you have a local based client base then leaflets in letterboxes is probably a goo way to start. Cheap & direct to the market you want. If going further then website & going down that road is probably the best way to go :)

A different and creative advertisement is positive to require your brads into public. innovative advertising continually introduces some terms which might appear foreign to classical advertising. That’s the wonderful thing about guerrilla advertising, the only limits are your imagination and your daring.

Break into houses and leave a NOTE

YOUR LOCKS SUCK, GET BETTER LOCKS OR NEXT TIME IT MIGHT NOT BE THE LOCKSMITH THAT VISITS

Actually I would contact local alarm systems installers and see if you can work with those guys referring business back and forth
Seems a good idea would be to piggy back on their larger marketing budgets and sell to them your services so that they can offer a more comprehensive package to customers

Here's a cheap idea, get a map and mark all the estate agent, lawers and police stations in your catchment. Visit each one and look for opertunites either in them or around them to post leaflets.

Online it's a bit harder because ideally you'll setup a great website and come up the keywords in your catchment area.

You could try traffic networks, it don't come any cheaper then that but you'll need one that allows you to define the visitor location as low as possible. Then it's a case of doing a splash page that grabs the attention and hoping that pops up in their mind when the need your service.

Try these;

Some other ideas on the link in the sig.

Easy. :)

Attend local neighbourhood watch meetings, do some business networking (breakfasts or evenings)... promote your business by being available.

If you want a website, get it done as cheap as possible... give yourself a budget and stick to it.

Use the likes of Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin to openly talk about your day - don't mention locations or names etc - but bring into light how many jobs you've done, the quality of someone's locks on their door before you got there and replaced them, a funny story for instance, anything to keep people interested in what you're doing and who you are.

Example:

Today, an old lady asked me to change her locks because her lock wasn't working, when I got their I found that she was trying to use her back door key on her front door... I didn't charge her, but I did get a nice cup of tea out of her. :)

Okay here's a few tips :

1. Set up a website for yourself with testimonials/ reviews etc. Set up facebook, twitter, google plus.

2. Make sure your on any local directories where you live. And yelp for usa.

3. Make a few videos and put them on you tube.

4. Post on your local classified site.

This all relatively free except for your time. Its all about connecting locally within your area. You could also connect with estate agents, letting agents, apartments etc as well. Follow up on everything. Build contacts. Make sure everything is targeted.

Do all this and work on it and I am sure you will get those emergency call outs:) and the rest.

Best of Luck.

Estate agents some people want new locks when they move into a old building, who knows how many keys to the old locks are floating around and do they meet modern insurance standards

Smart Uniform and Clean smart Van with good Graphics to set a good impression nobody would hire a greasy unkept person to play with their security

I'm no web designer Keith, but i gather mobile websites are pretty out-dated as it is all 'responsive' now?

A responsive site is as effective if (and it's a big 'if') the website is built properly in the first place - unfortunately many small business websites we come across barely display properly on a PC, let alone a mobile device ;)

Personally, I think that there is some merit in having a separate mobile version of the primary site in certain sectors and Locksmiths are probably one of them, even if their site is responsive.

    Two way: online and offline
Online: make a website which can just have homepage, make clear what you can do and the contact information. then promote your website in free ways. (you can find many ways)
Offline: use every opportunities which can tell others what you can do. I agree with "
beasty"'s advise, you can contact the alarm system installer, but before you go, you have to make sure they have no such service of locksmith of their own, because one of my client in UK purchasing alarm system from me who have service of locksmith, patrols and other services related to security. So for you, he is a competetor

I know this is probably untrue, but you tend to call a locksmith when you are locked out of your house so the ability to check the website might not be all that possible.

Of course you have smartphones. So that's not really true.

On top of the good advice already given, getting a good index and making sure you appear in those apps that show businesses that are nearby could be a good idea. I'm not sure what ones are available in the USA but I'm sure they exit.

As people who rent a house move the most I would target rental agencies. Some houses have different tenants every 6 months so the need for a Locksmith is there.

Local businesses with lots of employees ( Factory, Call centre, Utility Co) Ring the HR Manager and ask to be that companies 'Recommended' Locksmith for their employees. They can then included your contact info in their employee newsletters. Suggest offering £10 donation to their charity of choice for each job done for one of their employees

    3. Make a few videos and put them on you tube.

This is actually one of the things you DON'T want to do!

Seriously, is posting a video of yourself really something you want to do, showing criminals how to break into properties using a Locksmith's technique?

Biggest mistake ever to do this.
