How best to promote?

Hey guys,

I have a website launching in around 2 weeks or so selling extremely competitively priced consumer electronics.

What I am wondering is how best to promote the website?

Would you suggest getting a few hundred leaflets designed and posting them door to door? Would you suggest getting an ad printed in a local magazine/paper?

I'm preferably looking for the most cost-friendly solution.

Any input would be appreciated :)

To get my website around I used Facebook and the like, make a page on facebook for your Company and use your existing friends to "Like" it, I also when down the Leaflet campaign, cheap method of advertising. Infact I had an email off them few days ago offering 10% off. Cheap Print House is the Company I used...and no I dont work for them :)

I got 5000 Leaflets and 500 Business Cards for £99, quite a bargain!

I think I will be looking into promoting via facebook/twitter more than anything.

Does anyone think it's feasible to try and get a celebrity to 'retweet' as a means of promotion?

Morning!

Yes we delivered them ourselves, I had a read around about Leaflet Marketing and it says your more chance of getting your potential customer to read yours if posting on its own, rather than using a company who deliverys a few leaflets at a time.

It got my business rolling, some of them I speak when doing a round if they come out...hook them on price ;)

I can't get my head round twitter, im not convinced it would work for me, but I should read more into it.

My local printer does 5000 double sided full colour glossy leaflets for £65 and vistaprint will do you 500 cards for a fiver, although yours wasnt bad it still pays to shop around :)

These companies offer that as a cost saving option, almost all distribution companies will also offer a 'solus' delivery service, also they might offer demographic targeting te help enable you to market to your market rather than blanket marketing. (lets be fair, you're not hoping to sell iPods to the over 75's :D )

Personally I think the most important thing about a website like this is turnaround times, so deliver it fast and whack a bunch of leaflets in the parcels. Maybe a business card also -- less likely to get thrown in the bin.

Twice-monthly email newsletters to your growing customer base. Don't overdo newsletters though, otherwise people can annoyed and unsubscribe -- then most likely forget about you a few months down the line.

I agree on the newsletters, but I do believe it is all trial and error. The main reason I did a leaflet campaign is for brand, and to get people onto my site. Also stuck a few cheap prices on there for services to reel in the customers, offer them a great service and the word of mouth starts kicking in.

As I said, it might work, it might not... but you will never know unless you try! :D

Glad someone else mentioned ebay, I think its somewhat overlooked thesedays.

Whilst facebook/twitter can have tremendous value, due to popularity and (lack of) cost of using...ebay is still a brilliant portal.

Not necessarily to sell your items on there, but i've seen plenty of ebay shops where they signpost you to their home website...and to incentivise people to order from there, the items on the website sometimes appear at a slightly lower price than ebay (as you save on their commission).
