In Apache config re-right rule should be on.
I am using .htaccess to customize my web link.
I prefer cpanel[Optional].

A web developer has just sent me this? Can anyone advise on suitable hosting plans

Take a look at our Linux Shared Hosting Plans as standard they include PHP4 but we can install PHP5 on your domain without too much trouble. All are hosted on Linux with Apache and allow .htaccess

We use the Plesk Control Panel rather than cPanel.

No, we are not resellers, We lease all our servers, but we manage everything about them including keeping them all up to date/secure, installing software, managing them and so on. Oh and support customers.
